FAQ V-Ray

FAQ
1. FAQ new licensing model of July 2022

What’s the new Chaos licensing model all about?

There is currently 1 license model for all V-Ray products from the manufacturer Chaos, which consists of 3 variants:

  • Chaos V-Ray Solo – Node-locked license with access to V-Ray and Chaos Cosmos on all available 3D applications;
  • Chaos V-Ray Premium – Floating license with access to V-Ray and Chaos Cosmos on all available 3D applications, Chaos Cloud, Chaos Phoenix, Chaos Vantage, Chaos Player and Chaos Scans;
  • Chaos V-Ray Enterprise – Floating license with access to V-Ray and Chaos Cosmos on all available 3D applications, Chaos Cloud, Chaos Phoenix, Chaos Vantage, Chaos Player and Chaos Scans – available from 5 seats or more at a more attractive price.

What’s the difference between Premium and Enterprise?

The price. An enterprise version is cheaper, but starts at 5 licenses.

I have a permanent license, can I upgrade to an annual license of Chaos V-Ray Solo, Premium or Enterprise?

Yes, you will get a discount on the first year when converting from a perpetual license:

  • 40% discount on the first year when upgrading from V-Ray version 5;
  • 30% discount on the first year when upgrading from V-Ray version Next;
  • 20% discount on the first year when upgrading from V-Ray version 3.

I have a permanent license, can I upgrade to a V6 permanent license?

Yes, but only to that specific V-Ray version (for example V-Ray 6 for 3ds Max). With an upgrade from V-Ray 5 you pay 50% of the full rate, from V-Ray Next and 3 you pay 100%. Ask your reseller for the current price for this.

If I upgrade my permanent V-Ray for SketchUp license, does that mean I automatically receive V-Ray for the other host apps such as 3ds Max and Rhino?

No. Permanent licenses stay compatible exclusively with the host app they were bought for.

Are permanent licenses also available new?

No, unfortunately not. These are only available to people who have had a perpetual license in the past and do not wish to switch to the new licensing model.

I have SketchUp Studio. Does this mean I get access to all these V-Ray products?

No, SketchUp Studio contains only V-Ray for SketchUp.

Which version of V-Ray is in SketchUp Studio exactly?

In SketchUp Studio is a slightly different version: you only get access to V-Ray in SketchUp, but with a floating license.

I only need V-Ray for SketchUp. Not for all those other programs. Would it be better to buy SketchUp Studio?

Yes, that will be cheaper. As an added bonus you will receive Scan Essentials!

What’s the difference between Premium and Enterprise?

The price. An enterprise version is cheaper, but starts at 5 licenses.

I have a 5 seat enterprise license and I want to add a seat. Does the discounted price count for the extra seat?

Yes. And the end date will match the current subscription. The price will be prorated.

I have 4 Premium licenses and I want to add one. Will I pay the enterprise price for this license?

The extra license’s end date will be aligned to the existing licenses. The price will be a prorated Premium license price. At the end of the term, you can renew all five licenses for the Enterprise license price.

I have a Solo license. Can I upgrade it to a premium license?

Yes, the end date stays the same. You will pay the difference over the remaining number of days.

Are version 6 render nodes backwards compatible?

Yes.

I recently bought a new permanent license for V-Ray for 3ds Max, will I receive a free upgrade?

That depends on the ‘grace period’; the period preceding the release date during which one gets a free upgrade. The grace period is mentioned in the release information.

I read that in the V-Ray Solo version I do not receive free cloud credits. Can I buy them separately?

Yes.

I have an annual license for V-Ray for 3ds Max and I wish to renew. What is the price I’m paying?

You basically pay the price of V-Ray Premium and also get access to all those features. If you don’t want that, you need to indicate that you want to renew to Solo. You will then lose the floating option of your license, this becomes machine-bound.

2. Chaos Vantage – Frequently asked questions.

What is Chaos Vantage?

Project Lavina has evolved to become our first standalone product – Chaos Vantage – enabling users to explore even their most complex V-Ray scenes in fully ray traced, real-time, without the need for time-consuming conversions. This rich experience can be part of a live 3ds Max session, which is also coming to our other V-Ray 5 integrations throughout 2021.

Who is it for?

The main users will be V-Ray customers and possibly non-V-Ray users who would like just to experience existing designs. For example, the ratio of 3ds Max to Revit in AEC firms is 1:10 at best – meaning that 1 3ds Max user could be providing models for 10 others to experience (who are not yet Chaos users).

What can Chaos Vantage be used for?

  • Design exploration for personal understanding or informal, internal review
  • Design validation and presenting designs to either a supervisor or a client
  • Photorealistic previsualization
  • Quick rendering of final images and animations, where users want to present their design with great quality

What industries is Vantage currently suitable for?

Architecture

With upcoming updates:

  • Product design
  • Visual effects
  • Automotive

What’s Chaos Vantage’s Pricing?

You can find the prices at the Chaos Vantage product page.

Once the introductory price period ends, an annual Chaos Vantage license will cost €350

Chaos Vantage is also part of the V-Ray Collection and the V-Ray Education Collection.

Which Licenses do I need?

Chaos Vantage is a standalone product and does not require any other Chaos product license to run. It will be offered as an annual subscription.

Chaos Vantage is also part of the V-Ray Collection and the V-Ray Education Collection.

What are the system requirements to run Chaos Vantage?

  • Windows 10 with Update 1809 or later
  • NVIDIA RTX GPU (maximum of two)
  • NVIDIA Driver 436 or later (recommended version 466.11)
  • System RAM should equal or exceed GPU memory

Does it work with any V-Ray scene?

Yes, it works with any V-Ray scene. However, we recommend using V-Ray 5 for 3ds Max scenes for the ultimate real-time experience.

Please note, it hasn’t been tested with V-Ray scenes from Cinema 4D and Nuke.

Which V-Ray features does Chaos Vantage support?

All supported features can be found in the Chaos help files.

What does Chaos Vantage provide more compared to other real-time solutions?

Chaos Vantage is unique in providing real-time, 100% ray tracing on affordable hardware.

It is an especially good fit for original/large scenes, having many lights and photorealistic (V-Ray) materials – which describes the projects of most Design and VFX professionals. This allows the loading of scenes directly from where they were created – without prep work, like geometry decimation, shader simplification, or baking tasks required by real-time raster solutions.

nVidia cards are well known for their excellent OpenGL support, ATI/AMD performs less in that area.

nVidia GeForce chipsets in the GTX series are very good, and not that expensive. The Quadro chipset cards from nVidia are excellent but very expensive (these are true OpenGL cards, GeForce are more gaming cards but do perform well).

Be sure to download the latest driver from the nVidia website once you plugged your new card in. Drivers are software, and software can contain bugs that are being fixed in new releases.

16. What is the SWARM?
SWARM is a new distributed rendering system for V-Ray, which allows the user to render projects on multiple machines simultaneously. It is controlled using a web-based interface.
17. How does V-Ray SWARM work?

The V-Ray Swarm service must be installed on every machine that will be utilized during network rendering. Afterwards, you can activate V-Ray Swarm in Revit/SketchUp/3DsMax, by navigating to V-Ray’s render settings.

Important Note: In order for the swarm to work properly, each machine that runs in the swarm must:

  1. Be able to reach a license.
  2. Run the same install of the swarm.
  3. Be connected to the same LAN and Workgroup.

In order to read a license, use either the V-Ray License Server Manager (for online licenses and dongles that are in the same machine as the swarm node) or make the swarm read a license from a remote dongle through the Client License Settings program.

18. Does the V-Ray Swarm work over the Internet?
No, the computers need to be connected over a LAN.
19. What are Render Nodes?
A single render node equals one extra machine that can be utilized during network rendering. If you receive more render nodes with your license, you will be able to utilize more machines during network rendering.
20. Can I add machines to my network rendering?
Yes, you can. The idea behind network rendering is that the computing power from multiple machines can be combined to fasten the rendering process. When rendering, V-Ray will divide the rendering-process into tiny data-packages, which will be send to the various machines that are connected to your network. These packages will be processed to pixel information, and then transferred back to V-Ray. V-Ray for Revit can do this via Swarm rendering where you can share render nodes.
21. V-Ray for Revit- What are the limitations of the demo version?
The only limitation is time: your version expires after a certain period of time.
22. How do I install V-Ray for Revit?
In order to install V-Ray voor Revit, you first need to log-in at https://www.chaosgroup.com/ using your credentials, which you have received with your order. 6. Type in the address bar: http://localhost:30304/
  7. Click the big button named ´Dongle´ and select ´Upgrade´;
  8. Right click on the link to your WBC file and choose to save the linked file;
  9. You may need to replace “localhost” with the IP address of your server, the computer where the dongle is attached to and has the V-Ray license server running.

Note: You navigated to your localhost address, but can’t find an ‘upgrade’ button? This probably means that you still aren’t running the most latest version of the V-Ray License Server. You can download the license server under the ‘Download’ section on the Chaos Group website.
